The Christmas hits seem as if they have been around forever. Year after year we return to the same holiday songs, only rarely adding a new one like Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. But where did these iconic tunes come from? Where they the product of some studio looking to make money, or the heartfelt of people swept away with Christmas spirit?
All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth: This song must be in every dentist’s top five. There is nothing better than mixing teeth and Christmas, and if it has inspired a generation to buy tooth shaped tree ornaments, all the better. Written in 1944, All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth was the product of a music teacher, Don Gardner. He was working with his second graders when he asked them what presents were on their wish list that year, and all of the children replied, “All I want for Christmas…”. He also noticed that more than half of the 22 kids in class were missing teeth, giving them adorable lisps and whistling esses. He couldn’t get the class out of his mind, and decided to turn it into a fluff song. It took him less than an hour to finish writing the thing, but three years to find a record label willing to record it. Nobody thought that it had a chance of being a hit. It took only one Christmas season for the song to blow up, and in 1948 it was rerecorded by a bigger studio and given a national release. I just hope that those second graders got everything they wanted that year.
Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree: This perennial airplay juggernaut was recorded in 1958 by Brenda “The Little Firecracker” Lee. Standing four feet nine inches tall as an adult, she was even shorter when she recorded this song at 13 years old. The song was written for her by Johnny Marks, who also penned Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer, and is considered by some to be the best Christmas song writer ever. Brenda said years later that the song was recorded in July, in Nashville, on a swelteringly hot day. However, the label excec cranked the air conditioning in the studio and put a decorated Christmas tree in the corner to set the mood. More recently, this song was used in the holiday classic Home Alone, during the scene when Kevin is trying to scare away the burglars by making it look like a holiday party is taking place inside the house.
