Why Some People Hate Smiling

That’s right you read that correctly…
According to a new study, researchers found that 28 percent of people do not like to smile because of their teeth. This could be due to the chipped or discolored teeth, the coloring of their gums or possible receding gums. The study also found that 81 percent of people do not like the way that their teeth appear in pictures. Because people did not like the way their teeth appeared in pictures, this can greatly contribute to less people smiling and eventually hating their smile. These findings were rather surprising.
This study was conducted by Bupa, an international healthcare group, and surveyed about 2000 participants. They found the above statistics, along with 42 percent of these people said the first thing they would change about themselves in their smile. It’s amazing that the first thing people thought of was to change their smiles.
They also discovered so much more…
Some of these people were lacking proper hygiene etiquette. Some of these people did not know how to properly brush their teeth, and if they did, they did not always use toothpaste! Even more surprising, some people just chewed gum instead of brushing their teeth! That is very poor oral hygiene! People should realize that brushing their not only will clean their teeth, but improve their smile and overall health.
After finding this discovery, the participants’ who hated their smiles and exhibited poor dental hygiene, definitely show a direct correlation. Their poor dental hygiene majorly contributed to their poor smiles and why they hate to smile. It would be great to see the change in numbers if they conducted this study after these people started using proper dental regiments.
This study further demonstrates how important dental hygiene education is in today’s world, and how good oral health can change how a person perceives themselves. If people are not educated on how to brush their teeth and the importance of brushing their teeth, they will not do it. They also will not see the importance of going to routine cleanings at their dentist.
Lesson Learned!
If there is one thing we can take away from this study is to make sure you brush your teeth and make sure to teach children at a young age how important it is to take care of their teeth. Hopefully, this can decrease the number of people who hate their teeth and make more people smile!
