Lafayette LA Pediatric Dentist
At Camellia Dental, we love treating children so much that we call them happy visits. Drs. Foreman and Thimmesch each have three children of their own. They find great joy helping children love their dental visits.
What is a Pediatric Dentist?
A pediatric dentist is a specialist who has completed two extra years of training specific to children. The dentists at Camellia Dental are not specialists, but are trained to meet all the basic dental treatment needs for children. Many families find it helpful to all go to the same office. They get to know their dentist and the dentist understands the family and their dental history, which makes it easier to know what to expect and prepare for the children’s dental health.
Preparing Your Child for their First Pediatric Visit
We recommend bringing your children in around the age of two. Most, if not all, of their baby teeth will be in by that time and it is a great way to make their first experience with the dentist a positive one. Many parents make the mistake of thinking young children don’t need the dentist unless they have a cavity. Unfortunately, their child will then always associate the dentist with pain.
When you do take them in, don’t feel the need to prepare them for the appointment. That can sometimes backfire and relay to your son or daughter that you’re anxious, which in turn makes them anxious. If you treat going to the dentist as no big deal and just a normal part of living, they’ll take their cues from you and feel the same.
Their first appointment will consist mostly of demonstrating the equipment, as well as meeting the hygienist and dentist. When their appointment is done, they get rewarded with a toy.
