{"id":988,"date":"2013-03-22T15:46:49","date_gmt":"2013-03-22T15:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mikemalonedds.com\/blog1\/?p=988"},"modified":"2019-08-08T18:06:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-08T18:06:43","slug":"manufactured-smells-as-a-marketing-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/manufactured-smells-as-a-marketing-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"Manufactured Smells as a Marketing Tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve ever been to Disney World, you may have noticed some <a href=\"https:\/\/touringplans.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/30\/the-world-of-disney-world-smells\/\">overwhelming scents<\/a> in different areas of the parks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And I don\u2019t mean just from the food carts\u2014on the Soarin\u2019 ride at Epcot, you can smell the pine trees and orange groves of California.\u00a0 On the Kali River Rapids ride in Animal Kingdom, the \u2018burning logs\u2019 smell like\u2014well, burning logs.\u00a0 If you stay at the Grand Floridian during the holiday season, the enormous Gingerbread House actually puffs gingerbread smell out of its chimney.\u00a0 In general, there\u2019s a sweet, floral smell on the streets of the parks that is just so quintessential of Disney.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We owe that delicious Disney smell to former Imagineer David Martin who had the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/justinesharrock\/how-manufactured-smells-are-making-people-shop-longer-and-ki\">infusing attractions with aromas<\/a> to enhance the park-goers overall experience.\u00a0 The scents were used first at special events but were slowly added to indoor rides, stores, hotels\u2014basically everywhere on the Disney lot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today Martin is the brains behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scentair.com\/\">ScentAir,<\/a> the largest scent marketing company in the country.\u00a0 Martin is bringing the same concept from Disney \u2018the happiest place on earth\u2019 to other businesses.\u00a0 The goal is to engage all of the consumer\u2019s senses and keep them in stores, hotels, casinos, bars and restaurants longer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company has partnered with a marketing company called Mood Media who help their clients attract consumers in every way possible:\u00a0 using music, colors, visuals decorations, look and feel, and now scents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/features\/bs-xpm-2012-01-19-bs-ae-store-scents-20120113-story.html\">In hotels, scents come from air machines<\/a> located near guest elevators and in the main lobby.\u00a0 \u201cWhat we provide helps our clients more deeply connect with their customers by utilizing the power of scent,\u201d director of marketing Ed Burke commented. Westin Hotels for instance has a signature fragrance of white tea.\u00a0 Hotel Monaco in Baltimore has a Kimpton scent\u2014a cross between citrus, green tea, black pepper, and cloves all coming together in a musky smell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ScentAir\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/features\/bs-xpm-2012-01-19-bs-ae-store-scents-20120113-story.html\">client list<\/a> includes Ashley Furniture, Jimmy Choo, Bloomingdale\u2019s, Lexus, Hugo Boss, and an extensive list of hotel chains.\u00a0 Some scents like in hotels are intended to set a mood\u2014playful, upscale, sophisticated, or exotic.\u00a0 In stores, scents are intended to tempt people to purchase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Hershey Store in Times Square reeks of chocolate even though the candy is wrapped.\u00a0 In clothing stores, it depends on the season.\u00a0 When bathing suits are out, stores pump out a pina colada or coconut lime scent.\u00a0 During Christmas, evergreen, cinnamon, citrus and other spices get shoppers in the festive mood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The payback for companies employing ScentAir\u2019s servies is well worth it.\u00a0 There is a 60% recall for many businesses with scent, and sales have shot up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been aware of a particular scent while you\u2019re shopping?\u00a0 A baby powder scent in the infant department, or lavender in sleepwear?\u00a0 I have to say, it seems like an extremely clever marketing tool!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc_0211-e12864129926861.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-935\" title=\"about_doc_\" src=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc_0211-e12864129926861-146x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/about_mikemalone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Mike Malone<\/a>\u00a0and his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/about_us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team<\/a>\u00a0practice expert cosmetic dentistry in Lafayette, LA.
