And it could be as simple as brushing your teeth in the dark, an Oxford neuroscientist has claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Russell Foster, professor of circadian neuroscience at Oxford University in the UK, claims that the bright fluorescent bathroom lights wake the body up at the time it should be winding down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSleep is the single most important behaviour that we do. Across our lifespans 36 percent of our life will be spent sleeping,&#8221; said Foster,\u00a0as reported by Sarah Knapton at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/science\/science-news\/11966259\/Brush-your-teeth-in-the-dark-to-help-sleep-says-Oxford-University-neuroscientist.html\">The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften people will turn their lights down at night which helps to get the body ready for sleep, but then they will go and brush their teeth and turn their bathroom light on. That is very disrupting. It tells our bodies when to sleep and wake up, adjusts body temperature, releases hormones, and other vital functions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/10-sleep-tips-improve-health\/\">Getting enough sleep<\/a> is vitally important to our bodies. During sleep, the\u00a0body&#8217;s tissues are repaired, cognition is improved, immunity gets boosted, and the risk of obesity, cancer and mental illness is reduced.<\/p>\n<p>When you expose yourself to bright artificial lighting just before you go to bed, you\u2019re effectively telling your body it\u2019s time to wake up rather than relax.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have this master clock ticking on the brain and each individual cells have their own little clock, so it&#8217;s rather like the conductor of an orchestra producing a signal which the rest of the body takes a cue from,&#8221; explained Foster. &#8220;There is a beautiful symphony of rhythms. \u201cBut we live in these dimly-lit caves, both at home and in our offices, which are far less bright than natural light, even on a cloudy day.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2642\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2642\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/foliage-539413_1280-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Sun shining through leaves of a tree\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/foliage-539413_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/foliage-539413_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/foliage-539413_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/foliage-539413_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Get exposure to natural sunlight at peak hours for better sleep at night.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Solution for better sleep<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The solution for a better night\u2019s sleep begins in the morning. According to Foster, \u201cit is so important to get outside, particularly in the morning to reset the body clock.\u201d In other words, aim to safely get exposure to natural sunlight at peak hours and then dim your lights if you can at the end of the day. Limit use of glowing electronics like smart phones and tablets, and avoid drinking stimulants like coffee right before bedtime.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, try brushing your teeth in the dark.
