{"id":1801,"date":"2014-07-31T15:13:28","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T15:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mikemalonedds.com\/blog1\/?p=1801"},"modified":"2015-08-26T21:16:50","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T21:16:50","slug":"indian-boy-230-teeth-removed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/indian-boy-230-teeth-removed\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Boy Has Over 230 Teeth Removed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You might have heard this story on the news already.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty shocking, so we wouldn\u2019t be surprised!\u00a0 In India, there has been a very unusual and shocking dental condition landed a young boy in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The teenage boy, Ashik Gavai lived in a small village in Amravati.\u00a0 He first realized there was an issue a year and a half before the operation.\u00a0 Finally when the pain in his mouth became severe, his father took him to JJ Hospital in Mumbai, in fear something serious was wrong with his son.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The doctors were not expecting to find what they did. Dr. Sunanda Dhiware reported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-28437829\">BBC<\/a> that Gavai came into the hospital with a swollen right jaw. Dr. Dhiware and his team soon realized Gavai had a seriously rare condition diagnosed as \u201ca complex composite odontoma where a single gum forms lots of teeth. It\u2019s a sort of benign tumor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gavai underwent a 7-hour operation during which surgeons removed over 230 teeth from his mouth.\u00a0 In this rare condition, a single gum forms lots of teeth, forming a mass similar to a benign tumor.\u00a0 Dr. Dhiware reported they weren\u2019t able to cut out the teeth initially because they had all grown together in large masses.<\/p>\n<p>To address this issue, the team ended up using a chisel and hammer to remove the teeth, which were described as resembling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-28437829\">small white pearls<\/a>.\u201d At this time, Gavai has 28 teeth remaining.\u00a0 After much deserved recovery time, caps will be placed in his gums to replace the teeth that have been removed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gavai\u2019s team described his condition are very rare.\u00a0 Dr. Dhiware said she had never seen anything like it in the 30 years of her career, but that made the case more exiting for her.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The few past cases of complex composite odontoma involved a mass of teeth that formed together in the upper jaw, and not nearly as many as in the case of Gavai.\u00a0 Also, Gavai\u2019s tooth masses were deep in his lower jaw.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-888\" src=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc.jpg\" alt=\"about_doc\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Dr. Mike Malone\u00a0and his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/about_us.html\" target=\"_blank\">team<\/a>\u00a0practice expert cosmetic dentistry in Lafayette, LA.
