Would you go so far as to get your eyeball pierced?\u00a0 It\u2019s the latest beauty fad procedure being performed at New York City\u2019s Park Avenue Laser.\u00a0 Dr. Emil Chynn performs the new procedure, entitled \u2018Safesight Jewelry.\u2019\u00a0 Dr. Chynn reported to Fox News that he truly believes it\u2019s \u201cpretty safe\u201d even though the procedure hasn\u2019t been (and may never become) FDA-approved.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Dr. Chynn has had his share of young patients requesting the $3,000 procedure.\u00a0 That\u2019s right — it will cost you $3K to have a platinum piece of jewelry inserted into your eyeball.\u00a0 What ever happened to facial piercings and tattoos?\u00a0 Apparently these are a thing of the past, too commonplace for today\u2019s female millennials with disposable incomes.<\/p>\n

The procedure has origins in Europe and Los Angeles, and has recently shown up in laser eye centers in New York.\u00a0 Dr. Chynn explained the procedure in greater detail to Fox News: “It’s a very thin piece of platinum that’s designed for insertion on the top of the eye, it’s not in the eye so there’s no risk of blindness or anything at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained in further detail as he performed \u2018Safesight Jewelery\u201d on patient Lucy Luckayanko.\u00a0 The first step is to numb the area of the eye with an injection of lidocaine.\u00a0 Then a speculum is used to keep the eyes open and prevent blinking.\u00a0 Next — get ready for it — a small incision is placed on the eye between the white part of the eye (the sclera) and the clear part of the eye (the conjunctiva) where the jewel will be placed.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chynn seems unconcerned with the prospect of \u201ca little bit of local bleeding\u201d and goes on to say any infection will be prevented with antibiotics.\u00a0 Chynn says that he believes Safesight Jewelry is \u201canother way to advance the science of opthamology.\u201d\u00a0 But ironically, the American Academy of Opthamalogy not only doesn\u2019t approve of the procedure — they are warning people of the dangers of it.\u00a0 In fact, in a statement to Fox News the AAO stressed the importance of NOT putting\u00a0 \u201cin the eye any foreign body or material that is not approved by the FDA.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the meantime, Lucy Luckayanko is very pleased with the outcome of her procedure.\u00a0 She was looking for a \u201cconversation maker\u201d and her \u201cunique factor\u201d to begin with, and she may have found it.\u00a0 Lucy now has a little heart on her right eye which half of her comrades think is cool, while the other half believe she is crazy for getting a) an incision in her eye and b) a jewel placed in that incision.<\/p>\n

What do you guys think?\u00a0 We\u2019re thinking you must be extremely wealthy or bored (or a combination of both) to spend the money and time on such a procedure.<\/p>\n
