{"id":1529,"date":"2013-11-20T21:36:44","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T21:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mikemalonedds.com\/blog1\/?p=1529"},"modified":"2019-08-08T17:08:50","modified_gmt":"2019-08-08T17:08:50","slug":"bear-teeth-can-determine-population-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/bear-teeth-can-determine-population-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Bear Teeth Can Determine Population Status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know bear teeth alone can indicate an increasing or decreasing bear population?\u00a0 In North Carolina where the black bear population is growing, scientists have been making estimations and handing this data over to the state\u2019s Black Bear Co-operator Programme for years now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How the heck do scientists predict the status of a species\u2019 growing or declining population based on the appearance of a tooth?\u00a0 I wondered that myself before investigating the matter further.\u00a0 Black bear teeth have age or growth rings, which are indicative of a bear\u2019s age upon death.\u00a0 It can\u2019t be just any tooth either \u2013 only the \u201cthe two tiny teeth just behind the upper canines\u201d according to an article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/environment\/2013\/11\/18\/teeth-with-a-story\">The Star<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t clear why black bears develop these age rings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/environment\/2013\/11\/18\/teeth-with-a-story\">reported scientist Gary Matson<\/a> of Montana who performs experiments on the teeth to better analyze the growth rings.\u00a0 The concept behind the science is that each dark ring equals one winter the bear has lived through.\u00a0 Matson is shipped teeth from North Carolina bear hunters and \u201cprocesses 400 teeth per day.\u201d\u00a0 The experiment involves softening the teeth in acid first, and then making an impression of them in wax.\u00a0 This impression is viewed under a microscope at which point the growth rings are counted.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so maybe we can determine the age of a bear after counting these rings.\u00a0\u00a0 But how the heck does that indicate anything about the black bear population in North Carolina?\u00a0 According to the article, the status of the bear population is inferred based on compiling the ages of many bears altogether and then analysing the distribution of the ages.\u00a0 This in turn \u201crepresents the health of the population\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/environment\/2013\/11\/18\/teeth-with-a-story\">according to Matson<\/a>.\u00a0 This information is then sent back to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission where scientists assess whether the bear population needs to be managed or not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the black bear population was in rapid decline in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, the population has in fact been on the rise in the past decade growing at an average annual rate of 6%.\u00a0 This is partly due to the creation of bear sanctuaries in the 1970s and the enforcement of hunting regulations.\u00a0 Yet population management has recently become a concern as there has been an \u201cincrease in damage to agricultural crops by bears.\u201d\u00a0 Also bears have been increasingly turning up in populated areas like suburbs and cities.\u00a0 Unfortunately, hunting has been used as the primary means to help manage bear populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have to say, it makes me a bit uncomfortable when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/environment\/2013\/11\/18\/teeth-with-a-story\">article<\/a> claims the bear\u2019s teeth have \u201cno known function\u201d and can be removed from live bears.\u00a0 Now is that really necessary?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc1.jpg\" alt=\"about_doc\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Dr. Mike Malone\u00a0and his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/about_us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team<\/a>\u00a0practice expert cosmetic dentistry in Lafayette, LA.
