{"id":1417,"date":"2013-09-26T11:57:35","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T11:57:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mikemalonedds.com\/blog1\/?p=1417"},"modified":"2019-08-01T15:34:12","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T15:34:12","slug":"diamonds-really-are-forever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/diamonds-really-are-forever\/","title":{"rendered":"Diamonds Really Are Forever&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;if they\u2019re encrusted onto your teeth.\u00a0 No, I\u2019m not talking about the \u2018grillz\u2019 celebrities like Katy Perry seem to be sporting at high-profile events.\u00a0 Researchers at UCLA and the NanoCarbon Research Institute in Japan have found that nanodiamonds might be the future of oral health.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, I am not speaking of diamonds the size of an engagement ring.\u00a0 Nanodiamonds are microscopic spheres &#8212; specifically four to five nanometers in length and only viewable under a microscopic lens.\u00a0 Their potential for improving oral health could be great, researchers reported in the study published in the Journal of Dental Research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When used in a dental implant, nanodiamonds have the potential to do wonders, including helping to improve bone growth.\u00a0 Osteonecrosis is one of the many diseases that diamond-encrusted teeth could combat.\u00a0 The disease \u201ccauses bones to break due to a reduction if blood flow\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmeticdentistryguide.co.uk\/news\/diamonds-potentially-a-dental-implants-best-friend-4936\">CosmeticDentistryGuide.co.uk<\/a>.\u00a0 The disease eventually affects the jaw bone and movement, and it can impede someone from eating and drinking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When bone loss occurs while a patient has a dental implant, the implant can become loose and fall out &#8212; an uncomfortable and expensive result for the patient.\u00a0 Thus, a strong jaw bone is necessary to maintain full functioning of the dental implant.\u00a0 Scientists claim nanodiamonds can \u201cbe used as a delivery system for proteins in the mouth as an improved treatment for osteonecrosis,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-2429848\/Could-DIAMONDS-future-dental-implants-Teeth-encrusted-tiny-gems-promote-bone-growth.html\">DailyMail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Previously, dentists would treat bone loss by a surgical operation in which a sponge, once inserted into the mouth, would transfer proteins to promote bone growth.\u00a0 This is incredibly expensive, and scientists on the UCLA team say nanodiamonds would be much more effective.\u00a0 Nanodiamonds bind to bones easier, thus administering proteins more effectively and for a longer duration of time.\u00a0 No invasive surgery would be required either &#8212; nanodiamonds can be injected or given as an oral rinse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So far, trials have shown patients are tolerating the nanodiamonds well after insertion into the oral cavity.\u00a0 Researchers believe nanodiamonds have greater potential, possibly in treating some oral cancers and in administering different drugs to the patient.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is exciting news in the world of oral health.\u00a0 Can you imagine having diamond encrusted teeth?\u00a0 Even if you can\u2019t see them, that\u2019s still pretty cool!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/about_doc1.jpg\" alt=\"about_doc\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Dr. Mike Malone\u00a0and his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/about_us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team<\/a>\u00a0practice expert cosmetic dentistry in Lafayette, LA.
