{"id":1411,"date":"2013-09-20T17:24:29","date_gmt":"2013-09-20T17:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mikemalonedds.com\/blog1\/?p=1411"},"modified":"2019-07-29T17:23:56","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T17:23:56","slug":"cancer-fighting-cavities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.camelliadds.com\/blog1\/cancer-fighting-cavities\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer-Fighting Cavities?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cavities prevent cancer?\u00a0 That can\u2019t be right.\u00a0 But according to a study released in <i>JAMA Otolaryngology &#8212; Head &amp; Neck Surgery <\/i>this month, it is &#8212; People with more cavities are at a reduced risk for certain head and neck cancers.\u00a0 So, does this mean cavities aren\u2019t as bad as we thought?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher of the study Dr. Mine Tezal says no &#8212; &#8220;The main message is to avoid things that would shift the balance in normal microbial ecology, including overuse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/news\/20130912\/tooth-cavities-linked-to-lower-risk-of-head-neck-cancer-in-study\">antimicrobial products and smoking<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 But the findings were still unexpected, since previous studies have proved dental caries indicate poor oral health and periodontal disease.\u00a0 Also, individuals with head and neck cancers have previously been found to also have signs of periodontal disease like infections below the gum line.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The reasoning behind the claim that cavities protect against cancer is that lactic acid produced by bacteria that cause cavities may effectively ward off certain cancer cells.\u00a0 The lactic acid-producing bacteria \u201cprompt cell-mediated Th1 immune responses that suppress tumor formation,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/cancer\/head-and-neck\/index.aspx\">Everyday Health.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the types of bacteria that produce lactic acid are <i>streptococci<\/i>, <i>lactobacilli<\/i>, <i>actinomycetes<\/i> and <i>bifidobacteria<\/i> &#8212; the same kinds of bacteria used in yogurt production.\u00a0 The \u2018good kind\u2019 of bacteria in yogurt is beneficial to the digestive and immune systems.\u00a0 Reduction of these kinds of bacteria in the body have been linked to \u201cchronic inflammatory diseases, allergies, obesity, and cancer,\u201d\u00a0 according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/news\/20130912\/tooth-cavities-linked-to-lower-risk-of-head-neck-cancer-in-study\"> WebMD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So in actuality, it isn\u2019t entirely strange for the study results to show a decreased risk of certain cancers for those with increased dental caries.\u00a0 To break down the study, 399 patients were evaluated with head and neck cancer, and then compared to 221 people without cancer.\u00a0 Overall, participants with the most cavities were found to have a 32% lower risk of cancer &#8212; a pretty significant amount.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some experts are critical of the study and point out the dental damage cavities cause including infection and periodontal disease.
