Lots of people suffer from what is called orthostatic or postural hypotension.\u00a0 It\u2019s the sensation when one stands up and feels faint because of a sudden drop in blood pressure caused by gravity pulling your blood to the bottom half of your body instead of your brain.\u00a0 Orthostatic hypotension tends to happen to people when they stand up too quickly, and is more common among older people.\u00a0 According to MailOnline<\/a>, \u201cIt is thought to be the cause of fainting in one in ten people aged 60 or over, and is a common cause of falls in older people.\u201d
\nNormally, when one stands up there are blood pressure sensors in the neck that detect this movement which then work to adjust the heart rate and blood pressure accordingly.\u00a0 In some people no matter the age, these sensors do not function properly.<\/p>\n

This sudden drop in blood pressure tends to happen more among the elderly because the sensors naturally deteriorate with age so that the body is unable to increase blood pressure and heart rate as it should.\u00a0 Of course, there could be other causes contributing to the lightheaded or dizzy effect of standing too quickly, such as dehydration, heart conditions, and diabetes.<\/p>\n

The device scientists have developed for the elderly who suffer form orthostatic hypotension is essentially an adult pacifier.\u00a0 There is a small hole connected to a single tube through which the person breathes through, which purposely makes it more difficult for them to breathe.\u00a0 It sounds counter-intuitive, but the restricted amount of incoming air will cause one to inhale more vigorously on the tube to increase air going into the lungs.\u00a0 MailOnline<\/a> explains it as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s thought that the actions of sucking on the tube causes the lungs to expand more than they normally would, in an effort to pull in more air. This extra lung expansion signals to the body that it is struggling for air, which helps push blood back to the heart and brain. \u201c<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A study will be conducted at Vanderbilt University to test out the new product among 100 patients who will use it at home when feeling dizzy.\u00a0 So far, preliminary studies have shown a 50% increase in blood pressure as a result of more blood being pumped to the brain among patients using the adult pacifier.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What remains to be seen is whether the patients will tolerate the use of an adult pacifier.\u00a0 It is important to note that the elderly might look to other precautions in order to prevent incidents of falling over.<\/a>\u00a0 There are other causes of imbalance in older people including poor joint mobility, lack of muscle strength, and vertigo.<\/p>\n
